Sonoma Independent Wins Awards
Editor Greg Cahill won best feature writing for an article about the mutual manipulation between crime crusader Marc Klaas and the news media during and after the search for murder/kidnap victim Polly Klaas of Petaluma, CA. Cahill also won second place honors for best editorial comment.
Arts editor Gretchen Giles and longtime contributor Sara Peyton shared a second place award for best overall lifestyles coverage: Giles for her story about the horrendous child abuse inflicted on west county resident David Pelzer; and Peyton for an article about people meeting their soul mates through the romance personals.
Kenwood sports writer and contributor Bill English won a second place award for best sports coverage for an article about Sonoma Crusher owner Bob Fletcher's effort to bring professional baseball back to the county.
The Sonoma County Independent won the top award for feature writing in its circulation category and three other awards at the recently held annual California Newspaper Publishers' Association's Better Newspapers Contest awards dinner in San Diego
