Akiko's Sushi
$. Enchanting, tiny sushi joint in the theater district, with spectacularly succulent California temaki, among others. Downtown, 542A Mason, (415/989-8218). (P.A.)
$$. The sushi here is fresh and artful; try the briefly deep-fried Ritsu roll. Other (non-sushi) dishes are not necessarily of the same quality. Mission, 2170 Bryant, (415/285-3848). (P.A.)
$$. Try the daily sashimi specials, if you can get a seat at this unpretentious but all-the-rage place. The tempura is exquisitely light. If you can't get a seat, try the maki-to-go. 1283 9th Ave. in the Sunset district (415/566-1770). (P.A.)
$. For fresh California-style sushi, this is probably the most inexpensive place around. Try the spicy tuna roll. Arrive early; it gets packed. Pacific Heights, 1800 Divisadero, (415/931-1773). (P.A.)
$$. A slick (the wait staff wear headsets) venue for satisfying, well-made Japanese food. They have a sure touch with broth, yakitori, etc. Downtown, 115 Cyril Magnin (415/421-2101). (P.A.)
$$. It's a chain of tourist sushi restaurants, and the food sails by on boats. But the sushi is good quality and a good deal. Japantown, 1737 Post, (415/563-1030). (P.A.)
$$$. Really well-prepared sushi, with generally less fuss than Ebisu. Stick to daily specials, and you're guaranteed a well-above-average meal. Richmond, 5116 Geary, (415/752-5652). (P.A.)
$$. Miyabi An unprepossessing sushi joint. The ingredients are fresh and the dishes well prepared. Daily specials are often excellent. Castro, 253 Church, (415/861-0447). (P.A.)
