Go ahead and laugh—many have. But Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 surf-and-robbery thriller Point Break is one of the most purely entertaining movies ever made. In addition to being Patrick Swayze’s greatest role (even better than Road House in the pantheon of Swayzedom), as Bodhi, the wave-riding criminal mastermind; in addition to the great novelty of disguises consisting of Halloween masks of famous recent presidents; in addition to Gary Busey and John C. McGinley; in addition to Lori Petty (Tank Girl herself) as the love interest; in addition to some seriously rad handheld camerwork during the chase scene through the houses and back yards …
In addition to all that there is simply Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah.
So famous is Point Break that is has been referenced in everything from Sugar & Spice to Hot Fuzz. Metroactive.com’s Richard von Busack solicited a laugh at Reeves’ expense from Fuzz director Edgar Wright and stars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg in a recent interview.
And now the experience—like Rocky Horror Show and The Brady Brunch—comes alive onstage.
Point Break LIVE!, which has been touring the country, finally comes to the Bay Area—starting April 11 for a limited run at Xenodrome in San Francisco. The show features a new Keanu Reeves picked from the audience every night, because, after all, anybody can act as well as Keanu. Ponchos are handed out for the surfing scenes, which feature real water. Skydiving? Check. Keanu Kams record the action.
