Lost: “Something Nice Back Home”

On Tuesday’s American Idol, Paula Abdul revealed she’s a time traveler when she gave Jason Castro her critique of a performance he hadn’t done yet.

There could only be one explanation for that and other instances of erratic behavior.

She’s been exposed to electromagnetic radiation, and it’s caused her to become unstuck in time and utter creepy, incoherent comments.

The A.V. Club jokes that Jason Castro is her constant, but I think we know who her constant really is.

Yep. Just stay in touch with Skat Kat, Paula, and he’ll help you get through American Idol‘s never-ending commercial breaks time rifts.

Speaking of constants, I saw an interesting theory somewhere on the Web last week about why Ben Linus can’t kill his nemesis Charles Widmore (Alan Dale)—maybe Widmore is Ben’s constant. If so, it would make their feud even more interesting and complicated. Ben wants the bastard to die, but he can’t survive without him.

(Spoilers after the jump)

Because Lost co-executive producer Carlton Cuse promised during an interview on last night’s Attack of the Show that “Something Nice Back Home” would be more of “an old-school Lost episode,” the Linus vs. Widmore feud has unfortunately been pushed to the sidelines this week to revisit the less interesting Jack and a couple of Jack-centric threads that were more prominent in earlier seasons: the Jack/Kate romance and the unfinished business between the doc and his might-not-be-dead father Christian (John Terry), who was last seen chillaxing in Jacob’s rocking chair.

The island

Jack’s appendix is about to burst, and Juliet sends Sun and Jin to retrieve her medical supplies from the Dharma Initiative’s Staff station so that she can operate on Jack. To regain the trust of the 815ers, Daniel volunteers to help Sun and Jin find Juliet’s supplies and manages to persuade a reluctant Charlotte to join them. The Kwons observe in Korean that Daniel is crushing on his anthropologist colleague. Charlotte smiles back at the Kwons—she understands Korean and pretends to not know how to speak it. Jin briefly reverts to his old enforcer self when he confronts Charlotte alone in Korean and says her smile was a giveaway that she understood what they said. He threatens to break Daniel’s fingers if she continues to lie. Jin also wants Charlotte’s assurance that the copter will take his wife and baby home.

The doc’s appendectomy is successful (how shocking), and afterwards, Juliet confesses to Kate that she recently kissed Jack, but she’s aware he favors Kate over her.

Meanwhile, back in the jungle, Miles’ ghosty sense starts tingling, and he leads Sawyer and Claire to the buried corpses of Danielle Rousseau and Karl. The freightie is unsettled by his discovery. He wasn’t expecting Operation Ben Linus to take such a murderous turn. Daniel, Miles and Charlotte are clearly not on the same page as Keamy (Kevin Durand) and the remaining mercenaries, who survived the smoke monster attack and continue following their orders to kill anything that moves.

Sawyer enforces a 20-foot restraining order on Miles, who can’t go near Claire and her baby Aaron. The restraining order comes back to bite Sawyer on the ass when the freightie decides to obey the order and lets Claire out of his sight. A bawling Aaron has been left abandoned underneath a tree.

The night before, Claire stumbled upon her father Christian holding Aaron. That’s the last we see of her in this ep.

The flash-forwards

Evangeline Lilly is scantily clad for most of these scenes. I didn’t pay attention to anything else.

Stray observations

-In the moments between Charlotte and Jin, Rebecca Mader finally gets to do more than just complain and act prissy and Daniel Dae Kim gets to do more than just moon over Sun or be actiony.

-The Jin/Sun scenes depict a romance between two characters who usually aren’t paired together like this on prime-time, where, as Joyce Millman has said, “younger, whiter, unmarried people seem to have all the romantic fun.” Their relationship is way more interesting than the Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Ana-Lucia Juliet quadrangle. The only viewers who would find triangles, quadrangles and sextangles interesting are viewers who like to frequently use the word “squee.” God, I hate that word.

-Daniel’s crush on Charlotte has been hinted at earlier this season. On a Jeremy Davies-related note, I recently rewatched my DVD of his underappreciated 2002 movie CQ as research for an ep of A Fistful of Soundtracks. If you’re a fan of Danger: Diabolik and Barbarella—like I am—or the 1967 mockumentary David Holzman’s Diary and you haven’t seen CQ, which references those three movies, go rent it. Strokes video director Roman Coppola’s feature debut is an amusing little film about filmmaking, in the mold of Day for Night and Ed Wood. While rewatching CQ, I felt a tad frustrated that United Artists buried it during its release and omitted it from its 90th Anniversary Film Festival, which is currently playing at the Castro. Speaking of movie references…

-Future Jack steps on a toy Millennium Falcon in the kitchen. Sawyer calls Miles “Donger,” a shoutout to John Hughes, the most tolerant of screenwriters.

-Does Jack ever discover that Claire is his half-sister? In the future, he lashes out at Kate because of her lies (“I can’t have you like this around my son.” “Your son? You’re not even related to him!”), but that still doesn’t tell us if he knows or not.

-Rousseau is officially dead. What a waste of a great secondary character. I don’t want to sound like Alan Alda or anything, but the rapidly escalating female body count is easily one of the biggest flaws of the series.

The flash-forwards

Alright, I was kidding about my lack of attention. The flash-forwards in “Something Nice Back Home” pick up where the flash-forwards in “Eggtown” left off. After Kate’s trial, Jack changed his mind about his reluctance to visit Aaron and Kate—who’s raising Aaron as her son for reasons that have yet to be clarified—and has finally gotten hot and heavy with the former fugitive.

But Jack’s domestic bliss with Kate—and their engagement—are cut short by the reawakening of past demons. Jack’s suspicions about his reappearing dad are confirmed after the institutionalized Hurley relays to Jack a couple of messages from Charlie: “You’re not supposed to raise him, Jack” and “Someone’s gonna be visiting you too… soon.” The sight of his father and Jack’s anger over Kate’s lie about a phone call with “Noreen”—she was trying to arrange a favor for Sawyer, whose fate in the future is unknown—both sow the seeds for the doc’s pills-and-booze-fueled meltdown during the flash-forwards in “Through the Looking Glass.”

Next week: The 815ers continue to see more dead people. Locke encounters Horace Goodspeed (Doug Hutchinson, that creepy guy from The Green Mile and The X-Files‘ Eugene Tooms eps), the Dharma Initiative mathematician who was killed by Ben during “the Purge” that took place on the island 12 years before 815 crashed. Also, Paula Abdul’s brain short-circuits.

On a scale consisting of Lost‘s cursed numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 (4 being the lowest, 42 being the highest)…
