Kimya Dawson on cancelling out a show

As I was saying in my review, even though I hate Juno, I really love Kimya Dawson; this anti-folk singer,  in an open letter to her fans, describes why she canceled out a Boston show at a private house. (That’s what folk singers do a lot of the time.) The memo is significant on two points: one is that even if Dawson has her soundtrack in a Top 10 movie, she’s still playing on that harsh, harsh road.

Second is, despite what the film says, it’s no joke having a baby. I know, I know—I’m warping the message of a really honest and sincere comedy that just happens to be about as indie as the Chemical Bank.

Here goes: (Dawson writes.)

It was a tricky situation. I was promised a clean safe room in the
house to stay in with my baby, while the loud music was happening
downstairs. There was no safe place to be with her. The upstairs room
they told us we could go to was disgusting and people were smoking weed
in there. Every other room was packed and loud and lots of people were
really drunk. I had to get my baby somewhere that I felt comfortable
having her. I am sorry that some people are disappointed in me, but my
baby is the most important thing in my life and her well being has very
top priority over any show and anyone’s opinion of me. I was totally
mislead as far as what I was told. Trust me I feel horrible. I didn’t
leave just to be a bitch or a diva. I left feeling like total shit. I
was sad to leave and I am still sad. I really wanted to play a show
tonight, besides the show at the store. I wouldn’t just leave unless I
felt I really had to. It was not an okay environment for kids, bottom
line.
Sincerely,
Kimya

p.s. I have gotten some mean messages tonight saying it is my fault
because I posted the address of the house online. I was never told not
to. If someone had said that to me I would have found somewhere else to
play. I would absolutely not have set up an exclusive private show in
Boston for just a small group of friends. I would have found someplace
else to play. And regardless, that doesn’t change the fact there was
not a room ready for baby.
