Always on the lookout for cinematic portrayals of the oft-maligned newspaper editor, I was pleased to see 1948′s That Wonderful Urge (part of a great new 10-film set of Tyrone Power movies from 20th Century Fox). As the rapscallionesque scandal reporter Tom-Tom Tyler, Power bedevils Duffy (vet character actor Lloyd Gough) at the New York Chronicle (say, wasn’t that one of Charles Foster Kane’s newspapers?). Finally, Duffy snaps, “Get him out of here or I’ll print the next edition in his blood.” I wish I’d thought of that the last time a writer missed a deadline. Later, having been scooped by all the other Gotham rags, Duffy hangs his head in shame and sights, “Newsboys sneer at me as I go by.”
