The trailer for the 2007 British film Closure (a.k.a. Straightheads in the U.K.) made it look like a decent revenge story, so I bite on the DVD (I don’t think it got U.S. theatrical release). My mistake. This grindhouse version of Brave One is an extremely nasty-minded tale about a British woman (Gillian Anderson) and her one-night-stand boyfriend (Danny Dyer) who get brutalized by some coke-snorting rustic thugs. Anderson stalks her tormentors, bringing the “first reluctant but ultimately into it” Dyer with her. This allows the filmmakers to replay the initial rape scene and then turn the tables with a rifle-barrel rape of one of the bad guys.
I suppose it’s meant to be a meditation on violence, a la Straw Dogs, but it’s mostly voyeuristic in the worst pornographic way. I wouldn’t have minded so much, but I hated to see Anderson forced to endure so much onscreen humiliation. It’s as if Deborah Kerr had been cast in I Spit on Your Grave. The final “straw dog” was literally that—Anderson’s first tit-for-tat killing is of a baddie’s pet dog.
The movie, according to some British press reports, was partially government financed from some lottery fund, which many folks found especially galling, as if the NEA had chipped in for the budget to Saw IV.
