The Cat Dude Abides

A strange Big Lebowski sighting. In the daily comic strip Mutts this week (Feb. 4-9), the cat Mooch has taken to wearing a zoot suit and calling himself the Dude. In Saturday’s strip, Mooch curls up for nap, and his canine pal, Earl, says, “There he is—as always—just hanging around—doing nothing—nothing but being a ‘cat.’” Mooch then delivers the famous Lebowski koan: “The Dude abides.” Earl responds, “I don’t know about you—but I take comfort in that.”

Patrick McDonnell’s strip usually avoids references of any kind of current events or pop culture, so the riff is unexpected, even puzzling. I know there are Big Lebowski experts lurking on this blog. Explication desired.

  • Greetings from Ohio! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to browse your site on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the information you provide here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m amazed at how fast your blog loaded on my phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, excellent site!

  • My husband and i were now satisfied John could carry out his researching by way of the ideas he was given from your very own blog. It’s not at all simplistic to simply always be offering strategies which usually a number of people may have been trying to sell. And we also recognize we have got you to give thanks to for this. The specific explanations you have made, the simple site menu, the relationships you will help to create – it is mostly wonderful, and it’s helping our son and our family reckon that this idea is interesting, and that is seriously mandatory. Thanks for all the pieces!
