[whitespace] Time Out

By Karen Reardanz

LAST THURSDAY'S Bahamadia/Medusa show at Palookaville was an interesting outing, though not for reasons one might think. The show, which was billed to begin at 8pm, didn't get started until an exhausting 10:15pm. And a show like this one that featured not only musicians but dancers, poets and spoken word-artists is a lengthy endeavor. A full two-and-a-half hours after the show was supposed to begin, the second act, local poet Ekua Omosupe, had barely taken the stage.

At 9:45pm, I found myself lamenting the sad state of concert-goers today with the bartender, who noted succinctly that everyone's too wrapped up in being fashionably late to get the show started on time. Punctuality has a gotten lost somewhere along the way, and it's not the fault of Palookaville, it's not the fault of the performers (although Medusa did get lost in traffic). A word to the concert-going public--please show up on time.

Coming Up

Camryn Manheim, UCSC grad and the Emmy award-winning actress on ABC's The Practice, will return to town on Saturday, May 16, to read from her new book, Wake Up, I'm Fat, at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

The folks of Capitola's Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company will join the likes of the Doobie Brothers, Cowboy Junkies and Kenny Rogers (!) at Saratoga's Villa Montalvo this summer. They'll be performing La Bohème on August 21 and 22.

Ozomatli returns to the Catalyst on April 23 after a sold-out show last January, the Pharcyde plays on April 9 and Toto, yes that's right Toto, come to town on May 11 . On the Palookaville front, Love & Rockets continue the '80s invasion on May 5, it's a hip-hop party as the Underdawgs of Hip-Hip play on May 8 and last month's cancelled Lost at Last show has been rescheduled for June 11.

Henfling's is expanding its musical territory, and will begin adding funk, reggae and other genres not in the traditional folk vein. First up are locals Netwerk: Electric on April 1.

Also on the horizon is the first annual Carnival Celebration to be held downtown on June 5. Interested artists, musicians, vendors or volunteers should call 336-3537.
