Sexiest Software Designer

Maf Vosburgh at Microsoft

The most popular vote for Sexiest Software Designer was "oxymoron." Why do you think that, even after geek chic, software designers still get such a bad rap?

I think people believe way too strongly in stereotypes. Why shouldn't software designers be considered just as sexy as people in more glamorous professions such as accountancy or fast-food preparation? This nerdy image of software designers is just a myth. I'd say no more than 70 or 80 percent of programmers speak Klingon, for example, and most of those aren't exactly fluent.

What did your girlfriend say when she heard that you had won?

She apologized for nominating me, as she could tell that I was horribly embarrassed. It was very sweet of her, though. I am sure all my votes came from her. I think she should track down the guy who did her Lasik surgery and ask for her money back. He probably did it with a laser pointer in the back of his van.

You're from England. Do you think your accent is part of your sex appeal?

My girlfriend is American, and for some reason she does find my British accent sexy. It often has the opposite effect though. One woman once remarked that it would be like dating Austin Powers.

How do you plan to spend Valentine's Day?

In the evening, I think I'll cook my girlfriend some nice Indian food, and we'll watch an obscure TV comedy show we're obsessed with called Black Books. I think the most romantic thing is just being together at home and having fun in whatever way comes to mind.
