[whitespace] High-Octane Fuel

Sunday kicks into overdrive with the Odd Numbers and Jesse Dayton

By Sarah Quelland

THIS SUNDAY (May 13), Fuel has two exciting shows lined up. Locals the Odd Numbers hold a CD-release party for their latest disc, The Trials and Tribulations of the Odd Numbers, with Clay Wheels supporting. That show starts early, at 4pm. In the evening, Jesse Dayton (who last came through town with his rockin' country trio the Road Kings) takes the stage to perform songs from his new solo recording, Tall Texas Tales (released on his own Bullet Records), an album he refers to as his "writer's record."

Akin to young traditionalists like Hank Williams III and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, this Texas native was basically weaned on eight-track tapes of George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr. and Lefty Frizzell. Though the Road Kings are known for shake, rattle and roll rockabilly that sits low and sizzles on the hips, Dayton takes a real detour here. His twangy honky-tonk roots come through loud and clear on this purist album full of original tunes of hard luck and heartache. As its title suggests, the album delivers narrative songs penned by Dayton who brings his rich characters to life. His colorful lyrics spin stories about war veterans ("Jumped Head First"), California gold rushers ("One Year, Three Months, a Week to the Day") and Arkansas lot lizards ("Arkansas Chrome [Duct Tape Song]"). Dayton's touring band features Brian Thomas on steel guitar and banjo, Charlie Sanders on bass and Eric Tucker on drums. Sean Kennedy and the King Kats also perform.

Ultravibe is organizing a three-month battle of the bands. Call 877.HEY.WHAT or visit www.ultravibe.com for details. ... Reaction 31 holds a CD-release party with Luxt, Motiv, Soul Circle, Utopian Pipedream and Drist, this Friday (May 11) at the Cactus Club.

My New Life (a special group made up of ex-members of Boy Kicks Girl, and FreakbomB) will also perform.
