New in Town

Quarter Note

Reviewed by Nicky Baxter

This new Sunnyvale bar/club was a bit tricky to locate, but once you find Quarter Note, you're not real anxious to leave. A pair of life-sized Bud Bowl "player" placards greet patrons. Ensconced betwixt these bottleheads is a neon-lit CD jukebox. Quite a selection, too: rockers like Pearl Jam and Metallica share space with Smokey Robinson, Fats Domino and the Temptations. Straight-ahead conversation bars, waist-high tile tables and a couple of pool tables occupy most of Quarter Note's floor space.

Though situated in the city's silicon-chipped heart, the bar, dance joint and luncheonette is decidedly low-tech. Formerly known as "Mr. Luckys," the club was recently acquired by a pair of new proprietors, Robert and Vicki Reese. The Quarter Note opened in April, and portions are still under renovation. Lounging against the pizza slice-sized stage, for instance, are strips of pristine-looking plywood. In any event, Quarter Note's vibe is pleasant. Says manager Darlene Ventura: "It's friendly here, and we have wonderful owners." Indeed, before I introduced myself, Darlene was talking several miles a minute to a Keno-playing patron about how great her new gig is. By the way, Oscar the chef's happy-hour spread is highly recommended.

1214 Apollo Way, Sunnyvale (408/732-2110).
