New tour swings through the South Bay

TOURING IN SUPPORT of its Maverick Records debut, Revolution, Insolence returns to the Cactus Club on July 19 with Corporate Avenger opening. The tour starts only days before in Las Vegas and continues with dates scheduled through August. Insolence's first single, "Poison Well" (included on the Driven soundtrack), is also featured on MTV's 10-year anniversary of The Real World and can be heard when the ever-controversial loudmouth Puck makes his grand entrance. The band can also be seen on HBO's Reverb with Tantric in a July 14 performance. No word yet on when that might air.

Metro's Music in the Park kicks off next Thursday (July 12) at Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose. The free series, held every Thursday, 5-8:15pm, through Sept. 6, features performances by Greg Kihn (July 12), the Calling (July 19), Sonia Dada (July 26), Toots and the Maytals (Aug. 2), Jules Broussard (Aug. 9), Super Diamond (Aug. 16), Dave Meniketti (Aug. 23), Pete Yorn (Aug. 30) and Pete Escovedo (Sept. 6). Celebrate the life of John Lee Hooker this Saturday (July 8) at JJ's Blues. Enjoy a barbecue and performances by blues musician Brother Max Stanley and friends. Admission is free and barbecue plates run $4-$5. This Friday (July 6), Ultravibe holds the semifinals for round two of its Sound Off competition at the Cactus Club. Semifinalists Luxt and Kung Fu Vampire will perform, with Caiba opening and Krenshaw playing the after-party. Doors open at 8pm; tickets for the 16+ show are $8. Salmon made the semifinals but is unable to play on Friday. As a result, Motiv will compete in the semifinals and perform on Friday. Salmon will make up the date on Aug. 3. To date, the semifinalists that will compete for the grand prize on Aug. 31 are Outtaline, Naughty Barnyard, Creamsickle, Luxt, Salmon, Kung Fu Vampire and Motiv.

The Cactus Club hosts two shows Saturday (July 8), with Sloppy Meateaters, Unsung Zeros and Hidden Pocket playing in the afternoon and the Real McKenzies, the Briefs and the Shitkickers playing in the evening. Sloppy Meateaters and Unsung Zeros also play the night before (July 7) at Scooter's Pizza in Fremont. ... Stunt Monkey releases its new CD this Saturday (July 7) at the Los Gatos Outhouse. Pinehurst Kids, Olympic Year and Team Karate Warehouse also perform.

Kleidon's Lounge (San Pedro and Post streets in downtown San Jose) is hosting a free Tuesday-night film series titled Cocktails, Couches and Cinema. On July 10, the series features John Waters' Pecker and Serial Mom; it continues July 17 with The Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Legendary Band Aide Penny Lane, who was immortalized in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous, has taken an interest in San Francisco's Storm Inc. (formerly Storm and Her Dirty Mouth) and will be handling publicity for the band. Storm Inc. recently released its new record, The Calm Years, and has two Bay Area dates coming up: July 7 at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco and July 14 at Bourbon Street (formerly Lindee's) in Concord. This will be the last show at the Paradise Lounge, which has reportedly been sold. Marginal Prophets, Captain Bringdown and 12 Inches and a Tireless Tongue join Storm Inc. to pay respects to the popular night club. ... Tool has announced tour dates. The band is scheduled to perform Aug. 10-11 at the Berkeley Community Theater.
