Bands mobilize for Testament vocalist

THRASH LEGENDS UNITE to throw a full-scale benefit for Testament's Chuck Billy, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. On Aug. 11, Anthrax, S.O.D., Exodus, Forbidden Evil, Sadus, Violence, Flotsam and Jetsam, Heathen, Legacy and others give a concert of epic proportions at Maritime Hall. Death Angel (which features current members of Swarm) is even reuniting for one night. Billy Milano will be the master of ceremonies, with special guests Johnny Tempesta , Paul Bostaph and Tom Arya. Though the benefit is officially organized for Billy, he's opted to share the proceeds with another musician, Chuck Schuldiner of Death and Control Denied, who is waging his own war against cancer. A Thrash of the Titans preparty will be held Aug. 10 at the Pound in San Francisco where both Sift and Technocracy will celebrate the release of new CDs. ... Elements Boutique presents the first Urban Celebrity Golf Tournament tomorrow (Aug. 10) at Spring Valley Golf Course and Country Club in Milpitas. This event will feature entertainment, a silent auction and prizes. Check-in for the tournament runs 10am to noon, with tee time following. A fashion show and afterparty will be held at 9pm at the Usual. Camera 3 in San Jose is offering free music on the patio tonight (Aug. 9) with Menfolk playing at 8pm and Lisa Dewey performing at 9pm. ... Metro's Music in the Park continues this Thursday (Aug. 9) with Jules Broussard and opener Ricardo Scales. The free concert will run 5-8:15pm at Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Next week's concert (held Aug. 16) features Neil Diamond tribute band Super Diamond. The real Neil Diamond, who just released Three Chord Opera last month, is scheduled to perform Dec. 9 at the Compaq Center.

The Glam Slam Metal Jam tour featuring Poison, Warrant, Quiet Riot and Enuff Z'Nuff has been canceled. Apparently Poison bassist Bobby Dall suffered a severe back injury while performing that required surgery and will reportedly be in recovery for at least six months. Ticket refunds for the Aug. 14 date at Paramount's Great America are available at place of purchase. ...Duane Peters and the Hunns have rescheduled their Aug. 9 show at the Cactus Club for Oct. 11. A New View night featuring Death Machine, Uplift, Color and Velkro will take its place. Newly signed to Atlantic Records, Trapt will perform at the Cactus Club on Aug. 11 with Divided, Element of Surprise and 26 Weeks. . . . Osmium makes its return to the Cactus on Aug. 12 to open for M.O.D. New Society Anarchist, Ragweed and San Resina also perform. ... Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean has extended his stay in rehab, and the Backstreet Boys have rescheduled their Black & Blue tour dates. The concert slated for next Monday (Aug. 13) at the Compaq Center has been moved to Oct. 15. ... The Lynyrd Skynyrd/Ted Nugent concert scheduled for Aug. 9 at Shoreline Amphitheatre has been postponed following the death of Lynyrd Skynyrd's bassist Leon Wilkeson.

Tragedy hit one of our own on July 28 when Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell lost his 8-month-old son, Presley Scott Harwell, to complications from acute lymphatic leukemia. Donations may be sent to the Presley Scott Research Foundation for Leukemia (1525 Winchester Blvd., San Jose 95128. ... Harwell recently co-founded Spun Out Records with Smash Mouth's manager, Robert Hayes, former Night Ranger frontman Jack Blades and Tambourine Music's Scott Kellner. The new label is concentrating on local talent and has already brought Fuse, Triple Seven and Soul Circle on board.
