Celebrations and Exhibits

Arte o Muerte The opening of an exhibition of traditional and contemporary altars that reflect the individual artist's heritage. A procession, Aztec dance performance, face-painting, sugar-skull making and more are also a part of Día de los Muertos festivities at the plaza. Wed, 4:30pm (procession); 5:30pm (festivities and exhibit opening). Free. Mexican Heritage Plaza, Alum Rock Avenue and S. King Road, San Jose, 800.642.8482.

Living and Loving Memories A Día de Los Muertos celebration and ofrenda on exhibit throughout November. Those who would like to commemorate a loved one are invited to bring a photo for the ofrenda. The altar will be dedicated Nov 1, 7:30pm. Open daily thru Nov 20. Machu Picchu, Inside Inca Gardens Restaurant, 87 E. San Fernando St, San Jose, 408.280.1860.

Day of the Dead View a Day of the Dead altar and see original art by Rick Moreno, Mary Andrade, David Mansanares and Rosalia Mariz. Thu-Sat, 10am-5:30pm, Mon-Wed, 10am-5:30pm. Thru Nov 10. Mexica Art & Framing, 20 N. First St, San Jose, 408.293.2979.

Vivir Sonando y Morir Bailando Teatro Familia Aztlan presents a celebration of life on Day of the Dead. With music and performances by Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Grupo Inolvidable and salsa dancers. Fri, 8pm (preview, all seats $5), Sat, 2 and 8pm (evening performance is gala opening), Sun, 2pm, Wed, 8pm (free, tonight only). $12 door/$10 adv/$25 gala opening.
