HOUSED in one of the area's oldest buildings, the Glein-Fenerin on 65 Post, Splash has an aura and history behind itmostly as a cathouse during the late 1800s and a loan company from the 1950s to the mid-'90s. Joel Wyrick and Judy Pearson took it over in 1997 and restored it as a barbecue and reggae club called Waves Smokehouse and Saloon. It's been the center of Mardi Gras parties, Dancing in the Street, jazz festival jams and Rockstars and Bitches. It's been on the sale block for a while and now the keys have landed in the hands of George Gonzales. The president of Gay Pride San Jose, Gonzales has turned Waves into Splash, which aims to be the premier gay nightlife destination in the South Bay.
"People are tired of driving up to the city every weekend," he says. "We want to be a classy, clean place where people can meet, dance and have fun."
Splash also houses a real meat marketa restaurant called the Brothel, where chef Andreas Wieland has prepared a menu of American favorites like steak, meatloaf, and spaghetti and meatballs. Happy Hour attracts a mixed crowd with $3 premium pints, $2.50 domestic and $3 well drinks. The place had a soft opening on Halloween weekend. This Saturday, Splash presents a pregrand opening party with an appearance by Coral from MTV's The Real World.
