Short and Sweet

Local filmmakers showcased
at ImageFest '96

By Richard von Busack

A DAY-LONG series of independent films under 30 minutes (gathered through open submissions) will be featured at ImageFest '96 this Saturday (Dec. 14). ImageFest has evolved from a living-room-sized gathering to an event big enough to fill an auditorium. Works this year include Lili Schadf's documentary piece on downhill skiing, "Fire and Ice"; "Down for Life," a documentary by David Mehlman that observes the fatal illness of an unusual AIDS patient; "Keep 'Em Flying," Bill Reifenberger's report on the WWII African American bomber-escort squad that never lost a plane; and "The Speed of Light," Ken Karn's fictional short film about an astronomy teacher's contemplation of the troubles of terrestrial love. In all, 23 short films will be screened in three different sessions.

ImageFest '96 plays at 1, 4 and 7pm on Saturday (Dec. 14) at the Cubberley Center Theater, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Admission is $6 per session or $12 for all three. For more information, call 415/856-1305 or check the Imagefest Web page.
