[whitespace] Quest for Fire

By Todd Dayton

THOSE IN THE KNOW say the drink with the most heating power per ounce is the habañero chile-infused tequila at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant (5929 Geary, 415.387.4747). Known for one of the best tequila selections this side of the Rio Grande, Tommy's takes a Herradura silver grade tequila and adds habañero chiles to percolate into an infernal house brew. Waitress Candy Bermejo says, "We started putting fruit in some of our tequilas and those went like wildfire. So we tried it with habañeros. Now that's a bit different, but some people say they like it." The restaurant uses a fair share of the fiery booze in its dishes, including the camarones diablos. Bermejo says that takers rarely even finish a shot, although an adventuresome man once downed five in a row. Interested patrons are referred to bartender and resident tequila expert Julio, who offers plenty of warning before pouring. If you just can't shake the cold this winter, try it. As Bermejo says, "It'll warm you up, all right."
