Music Agenda

[whitespace]

The shows at Bay Area creative music venues happen often, and the venues often collaborate to make sure there's little overlap so concert-goers don't have to flip a coin to decide which group to check out. For updates on concerts, the best resource is the Bay Area Creative Music Calendar, which offers a thorough listing of musicians, CDs, upcoming concerts and plenty of pointers to other Web sites for fans to explore. A listing of a few of the shows happening in the coming weeks:

June 16: Gerry Hemmingway Quartet, with Ray Anderson (trombone), Ellery Eskelin (tenor sax), Mark Dresser (bass). Beanbender's, 2295 Shattuck, Berkeley; 415/621-1967.

June 20: A.W.D. and Moe! Staiano with Humans (Tom Nunn, Dennis Fritts, Ches Smith and Michael DeLaCuesta). The combination of Staiano with Nunn is fortuitous. Both are skilled at creating engaging percussive sounds out of the unlikeliest sources. Staiano employs everything from oil barrels to piano frames, while Nunn has a contraption called "The Bug," a board rigged with wires, coils, nails and other objects that create a musical sound. Venue 9, 252 Ninth St.; 415/978-2345.

June 28: Matthew Sperry (British saxophonist), John Butcher (bass) and Gino Robair (drums). Robair's a regular at many of the shows around town, expanding on the typical drum kit setup by using hand-held fans and other gadgets. Beanbender's, 2295 Shattuck, Berkeley; 415/621-1967.

June 30: Fred Frith. Since the relationship between jazz and the avant-garde is close, Oakland's leading jazz venue occasionally features out-there musicians like Frith, a British guitarist who started in the '70s with the group Henry Cow and later worked with such folks as Richard Thompson and Bill Laswell. Numerous solo albums display his experimental guitar work. Yoshi's, 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland; 510/238-9200.
