The Name Game

[whitespace] By Harmon Leon

A punk band's name sets its tone. It's their calling card, proclaiming what the band is about. Here are a few classic punk bands and the origins of their names:

The Sex Pistols--A penis.

The Circle Jerks--An adolescent-boy, group-wank activity.

Dead Kennedys--A dead duo of presidential brothers.

The same holds true in the world of Christian punk. Here's the name origin of a few local Christian punk bands and venues:

Anguish Unsaid
Hometown: Sacramento
Origin of Name: It refers to the anguish which Christ felt on the cross, dying for our sins.

Smiley Kids
Hometown: On the 5 Minute Walk label, but based in Denver.
Origin of Name: A bunch of nice, smiley kids.

24Seven
Location of Venue: Newark
Origin of Name: 24Seven is the amount of time one should spend thinking about Christ--24 hours a day, seven days a week!

Dimestore Prophets
Hometown: Fremont
Origin of Name: Prophets aren't really worth much unless their messages come true.
