[whitespace] House of Cards

D.B., Phone Home

By Mark Ewert

We loved her when she was 4, and we love her even more now that she's all grown up. She's a survivor, of both the pitfalls of Hollywood and her own careening crash through the nightmare that is drug addiction; a blonde cutie-pie with a mind of her own. Of course I'm talking about Drew Barrymore, the girl-child some San Franciscans identify with even more closely than they do their own best friends. What kind of summer has Drew been having; what does autumn hold in store for her? Let's turn to my deck of cards and see.

Drew's recent past: The Ace of Pentacles: (gifts from the universe in the form of money, property, career success, good health, etc.)

For Drew, July and August were all about welcoming her continued good fortune with the lighthearted sweetness that she is so known for. Every morning, she would wake up to the sound of a songbird's trill, open her eyes and give herself a great big hug underneath her light linen sheets that smell faintly of lavender, a gift from good friend Liv Tyler. Drew's task these months was merely to open up and accept all the good things that came rolling her way, which isn't always as easy as it sounds: don't we all sometimes look gift horses in the mouth? Drew, however, acquitted herself admirably. Graciously she accepted the bounty of her success without either turning it away or letting it give her a big head. Brava, Drew, brava!

Drew's present: The Five of Swords (paranoia, competitiveness)

September signals the end of the carefree days of summer. Oftentimes, old fears rear their heads. Drew's challenge right now is not to let demons from her early childhood spoil her innocent outlook on the world, as cards numbered five are often about confronting our earliest negative conditioning. Let's hope that the firm base she established for herself in July and August helps her stay grounded. Drew, remember, you are not your parents, you are not the people you grew up around. Realize that this is your life, not anyone else's. Don't believe everything you were told!

Drew's future: The Sun (radiant expression of Self)

Ah Drew, we knew you could do it! Just as you emerged from the foul sewage of Movieland muck as a child, so you have again wrestled with your shadow and emerged even more glorious than before. Drew, you're an alchemist. As long as you stay true to your sunflower heart, everything you touch, no matter how corrupt or foul, will turn to gold. I can feel myself turning golden brown in the rays of your life-giving Soul. Sol Invictus: invincible sun!
