[whitespace] Films accompanying the Picasso exhibit give a complete picture of the artist's history

By Christine Brenneman

By turns spellbinding, informative and frightening, the series of films accompanying Picasso and the War Years: 1937-1945 serves to complement and enrich the exhibit and puts the artist's works into a specific historical context. Through documentaries, feature films and critical art films, this series offers a more complete picture of Picasso and the era in which he lived. A few of the highlights include Night and Fog, a documentary providing a French perspective on the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps; director François Truffaut called it "the greatest film of all time." Also fascinating is Pablo Picasso: The Legacy of a Genius, which critically investigates some of Picasso's most important works with insights from a range of artists, critics, art historians and relatives of the artist. Shown in the beautiful Florence Gould Theatre inside the Legion of Honor Museum, these films will run Wednesday Nov. 4, 5-8pm, Saturdays, 2-4pm (Nov. 28, Dec. 5 and 19), and Sundays, 2-4pm (Nov. 8, 22, 29 and Dec. 6, 13). All films are free with museum admission. Call 415/750-3638 for more information.
