FREEBIE OF THE WEEK: Are you ready for the Metro Fountain Blues Festival? (Not that we're biased or anything, since it's named after the newspaper that signs our paychecks, the valley's last outpost of independent journalism.) The free festival gets down Saturday at Paseo De San Carlos on the San Jose State University campus and features the searing sounds of Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Roy Rogers and his Rhythm Kings, Craig Horton with Rusty Zinn, Debbie Davies, and The Daniel Castro Band. That's Saturday May 13, 2006 from 12:30 to 8 pm.
HOT INSIDE TIP OF THE WEEK: Those in the know remember that Fergie and Co. got off the hook at The Vault Ultralounge the last time the Black Eyed Peas performed here, and managements of BEP and the Vault have stayed tight since. So don't be surprised if history repeats itself after the Oakland show on Friday. The official Black Eyed Peas afterparty gets retarded, I mean started, around midnight. But don't phunk around and get there at 9 if you want be sure to get in because word is spreading fast. Better yet, call 408.298.1112 and reserve a table.

REPORT FROM VEGAS: Well, we've recovered from last week, starting with a rooftop party at Ghostbar at Las Vegas' new Palms Hotel. On Saturday, it was a religious experience at celebrity hangout Tao in the Venetian Hotel. We managed to make it out of the intimate 42,000-square foot club at 4am and head over to the after-hour action at the Empire Lounge. Then spent Sunday afternoon sucking down super sized strawberry daiquiris poolside at Hard Rock Hotel as tattooed, tanned, surgically optimized, thong flossed bodies pulsated in the pools and cabanas to techno and house sounds. They call the party Rehab for a reason. Whew, it's good to be back in San Jose!
POOL PARTY: Great America's new adult water park, Boomerang Bay Beach Club, will mix up a similar cocktail of sunshine, dance music, alcoholic libations and swimming pool fun on Saturday, May 13. Superstar DJs Christopher Lawrence, Donald Glaude and Mark Farina will spin. Details: Saturday, May 15, noon-9pm at Great America, 4701 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara. Cover is $40.
DANCE CLUB PICK: The last time we stopped by SOFA Lounge in Downtown San Jose, we spotted some of the craziest spontaneous break dancing we've seen in a while. One of the coolest alternative scenes around, you can experience the legendary Velvet Shop every Thursday ($5 cover) and, this Friday, Dynamite Soul with Djs Shortcut, Apollo and Fran Boogie ($10 cover). SoFA Lounge is located above Eulipia Restaurant, at 372 S. First Street, San Jose.
MORE BETTA BLUES: The Pleasure Kings band performs at 9pm at JJ's Blues (3439 Stevens Creek Blvd.) on Wednesday, May 10. Associated Students of SJSU present a free blues barbeque concert at the A.S. Recreation area, located in the Plaza de San Carlos area. Thursday, May 10, from noon to 1pm. Norwegian blues act The Woodleg Odds performs at 9pm at JJ's Blues on Thursday, May 11. Local sensation Shane Dwight appears with his band at 9pm at JJ's Blues on Friday, May 12. Swing Shift plays the Fountain Blues Festival after party at JJ's at 9pm on Saturday, May 13.
WPOD: The Tubes tore up the 70s and '80s with hits like "White Punks on Dope," "Don't Touch Me There," and "Talk to You Later." So if you are expecting some washed up, has been act, you'd be wrong about that. We verified this first hand at last December's show at SF's Red Devil Lounge. Prairie Prince pounds the skins like there's no tomorrow. Fee Waybill is still in great shape, strong of voice and looks good with a TV on his head, along with other gems from a wardrobe of ridiculous costumes. LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS: R. Kelly's new song, "Gorilla," has the R&B singer making monkey noises with Fabo of D4L. Kelly performs Friday and Saturday at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Tickets are $39.50-$75 and available through Ticketmaster.
SAVE ON SECOND SUNDAY TICKETS: The legendary Second Sunday party kicks off June 11 at Kelly's Mission Rock in San Francisco, and the first party of the season is usually among the hottest of the year. DJ lineup includes Doc Martin, Andy Caldwell, Jeno, M3, Ellen Ferrato, Mike Ameci and Second Sunday co-founder Ben Doren. The first 200 tickets are discounted to $20 and are going fast online.
