Second Sunday, Free Concerts, Ozomatli, Hank III, Chilligan's Island and Choke Holds

Pato Banton

phone:408.279.1776
price:Free

MUSIC IN THE OTHER PARK: Pato Banton kicks off the 2006 Metro Music in the Other Park free concert series with his band Sol Horizon and, no, this isn't a shameless plug for our paycheck. Banton has played with the best Euro-reggae pioneers like UB40 and the English Beat through the '80s and while other reggae artists have gotten away from the true roots of the reggae sound by playing simplified Kokomo riffs and pontificating solely about ganja, Pato Banton has remained solid blending Jamaican patios his native English drone and a dose of early hip-hop to create an unmistakable sound.

STREET SIGNS: Ozomatli, the uprising 10-piece outfit from LA whose commitment to music is rivaled by their unwavering commitment to political and social change, bring their in-your-face Afro-Latin soul, jazz, salsa and funk mash-up style to the tony digs of Saratoga for a little culture shock.

SECOND TO NONE: Second Sunday is finally here. The juggernaut of off-the-hook parties, the one and only Second Sunday, is making its much anticipated comeback this Sunday; much to the relief of the DJ starved masses who would normally spend Sundays nursing a hangover on the couch. There is still a chance to get discounted tickets online, so why spend $30 at the door when five minutes on the computer will save you $10? The legendary Second Sunday party kicks off June 11 at Kelly's Mission Rock in San Francisco. DJ lineup includes Doc Martin, Andy Caldwell, Jeno, M3, Ellen Ferrato, Mike Ameci and Second Sunday co-founder Ben Doren. The tickets for the return of Second Sunday are going fast online.

WITH GILLIGAN, THE SKIPPER TOO: That's right, we're throwing a huge island party to kick summer off right, but there'll be no shipwreckin' at Chilligan's Island. Clandestine Crew will make their triumphant return to the San Jose party scene dropping deep house beats all day long while special guest band Drunken Starfighter will keep it hot and live at downtown SJ's Smoke Tiki Lounge on Saturday, June 10. The festivities start at 2 in the afternoon and go until somebody can actually sing the closing theme song regarding the hapless adventures of the SS Minnow.

price:$25

FIGHT CLUB 3: It seems like nearly every week you can watch grown men beat the holy hell out of each other, well this time there won't be the interference of 1024-dpi plasma screens. Strikeforce Mixed Martial Arts fighting takes over the HP Pavilion on Friday and Club Glo is throwing the after party with local MMA stars Cung Le and Daniel Puder, also featuring a special Battle of the Ring Girls competition that will be considerably less brutal than the actual fight, maybe.

FLIPPER (NOT THE DOLPHIN): Seminal '80s San Francisco punk rockers Flipper come out of the retirement home to inflict ear-bleeding sonic distortion on yet another group of unsuspecting youngsters. Flipper has received almost every level of negative feedback in their years and it's all not just from their amps. The Bay Area punk pioneers were (and still are) all about anger, booze, drugs and noise, but the fact that rings truest is that Flipper blazed the trail for bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden to corral the sound and make millions.

Chilligan's Island, June 10, 2006, San Jose CA
Hank Williams III

Hank Williams III w/ Murder Junkies

when:Friday, June 9, 8pm
where:The Catalyst, 1011 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz
phone:831.423.1336
price:$14-$17

AND THE DEVIL MAKES THREE: Hank Williams III is the absolute scion of a legendary country music lineage, but baptized in the angst ridden punk rock fires of hell. "Three" is a hellbilly rocker fueled by Jack Daniels and gasoline with a dysfunctional band of outlaws in tow backing up his rip your heart out and tear your face off licks. While dad's been preening for MNF, Hank III has taken control over the reins of his family's rocking horse and aims that multi-trick pony straight for the coast.

phone:408.294.7800
price:Free

FTB: San Jose Ska-Funk rockers Funk The Band, who've been rocking small venues and bowling alleys around the Valley for eight years, are finally getting some deserved recognition in the San Jose live music scene for their blended musical stylings and on-stage antics. This quartet of local boys reminds us that music is still fun and not just the slacker way to pay rent. Funk The Band proves they're not about the money with a free album release concert party and some shtick at South First Billiards.

SIN

SIN

DON'T REPENT: Well, it's about time somebody threw an upscale weekend party at an ultra lounge with guest DJs, dancing and drink specials. The Liquor Barrel Allstars with Zhal Dee and Brotha Reese bring you the aural sensations while the bar staff at Taste Ultra Lounge will elicit similar sensations from your liver.

STRAIGHT FROM THE GARAGE: Local bands rip up the stage at Johnny V's Friday and Saturday featuring 3-chord junkies like 12 Steps to Nothing, INFM and Holy Rolemodel throwing licks on Friday while Saturday catch Six Steps to Hell, Negative Head and Suicide Stomp Box. Parents across the South Bay should send Johnny V's a few fifths of booze in appreciation for relieving their collective headaches.

Pornutopia

Johnny Barraco's Pornutopia

when:Friday, June 9, 9pm
where:Studio 8, 8 S. First St., San Jose
phone:408.279.4444
price:Bet on expensive

THE CASE FOR VIAGRA: Our Valley gets a taste of that other Valley to the south when Johnny Barraco travels to Studio 8 with some starlets that you're unlikely to see at the Century Theaters. Resident DJs will be providing the tunes and there's sure to be aptly named drink specials at this celebration of "art as life." Pornutopia is back by popular demand and, c'mon, who wouldn't demand it back? Don't answer that.

HALLELUJAH: Reverend Horton Heat the original preacher of the sinful ways of liquor, gambling, fast cars and faster women makes his return to San Jose after a nearly six-year absence. These psychobilly boys from Texas sell-out every venue they play and we all know how small the Blank Club is so score some tickets early. The Rev sets up his proselytizing tent and begins the sermon to hell at the Blank Club July 5th.
