Abstract Rude

Abstract Rude w/ Tribe Unique, Deep Rooted, Whiskey Avengers & others

when:Thursday, July 13th, 9pm
where:Agenda Lounge, 399 S. First St., San Jose
phone:408.380.3042
price:$10

MAKING TRACKS: When everything you know goes the commercialized mainstream route and your music gets air play in suburban shopping malls, the tough go underground to rule. Abstract Rude is all about the preservation of the LA underground hip-hop scene aiming his unparalleled lyrical attack at sucka MCs and glorified record players who make claims at DJ stardom. Get ready for hunting season when Abstract Rude hits the Agenda on Thursday with Tribe Unique, Deep Rooted, Whiskey Avengers, DJ Drez and other soldiers of the subterranean funk mic-ed army.

Anna Nalick

Anna Nalick @ Metro's Music in the Park

when:Thursday, July 13th, 5:30pm
where:Plaza de Cesar Chavez, Market and San Carlos Sts., San Jose
phone:408.279.1775
price:Free

NO BUBBLEGUM HERE: While other pop stars are signing about scoping boys at the local mall, Anna Nalick is opening up her heart's diary and recording songs likened to self-help serenades for the soul. An unlikely star at 21, Nalick's debut single "Breathe (2am)" generated tons of air play on radio and television shows leading her to being crowned a new musical sensation by VH 1 and Rolling Stone and to her opening for the likes of Train, Rob Thomas, The Wallflowers and Chris Isaak before fully cutting her first album. See what the right endorsements can do for your career? Anna Nalick's only Bay Area stop on her current tour is at Metro's Music in the Park.

Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth

when:Friday, July 14th, 9pm
where:The Fillmore, 1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco
phone:415.346.0600
price:$12

TEENAGE RIOT: Accessibility and mainstream rock 'n roll has never been Sonic Youth's strong suit, in fact, the very terms are completely foreign. For over 25 years these avant-garde noisemakers have been synonymous with shredding guitar licks and distortion that transition from hauntingly melodious to amped ear blowing punk in a single chord change. The quartet's new album, Rather Ripped, melds classic Sonic Youth musical deconstructionism with '70s rock...strange, but true and these guys are probably the only band that could pull it off.

Sage Francis

Sage Francis

when:Friday, July 14th, 9pm
where:Avalon Nightclub, 777 Lawrence Expwy., Santa Clara
phone:408.241.0177
price:$25

A HEALTHY DISTRUST: With politically tinged dissident lyrics and emotionally poignant rhymes, Sage Francis uses the First Amendment to his full musical advantage like other rappers use Cristal and Escalades to bolster their image. His deconstruction of the latent hypocrisy held within the modern system while breaking down the more personal aspects of both his life and the rap culture has gained Sage Francis the dicey reputation as either hip-hop's doom or savior depending on whom you ask. One thing's for certain, this battle MC doesn't take any smack and never stays quiet.

where:Moorpark Hotel, 4241 Moorpark Ave., San Jose
phone:408.864.0300

GET DOWN FOR A CURE: The Detox Pool Party to benefit breast cancer research has to be one of the best ideas for continued awareness concerning this omnipresent problem. The crews from Cardiff Lounge and Nirvana Salon teamed with the John Muir Breast Centers for a full day of music including live bands, Flavor Biscuts, Hucks Wild Ride and the Pounders with DJ stylings from Frederico Zabala, Adrian Corona and Jarred Gallo. Come out to the Moorpark Hotel on Saturday to show your support for this important cause with all proceeds benefitting the John Muir Breast Centers.

where:Smoke Tiki Lounge, 152 Post St., San Jose
phone:408.292.4266
price:Free before 2pm, $10 after

SUNDAY, FUNDAY: What could be better than a monthly deep house throwdown by some of the best Bay Area spinners in the biz? Not having to drive to the City for it. The Lost party returns on Sunday to Smoke Tiki Lounge in Downtown SJ for another full day of sun, BBQ and grooves with turntable mayhem by Jeno and M3 along with legendary San Jo beat scientists Rick Preston and Harry Who. Paul Leath, Les Carter and Mike Davis will throw in their 2-cents and the hot crew from Smoke will do their best to keep you hydrated while you shake it.

Savage Thursdays: Music in the Park After Party

where:The Vault Ultra Lounge, 81 W. Santa Clara St., San Jose
phone:408.298.1112
price:Free before 10pm

MUSIC TAMES: After you've taken in the free concerts at Metro's Music in the Park cruise over to The Vault and keep the party vibe going. Savage Entertainment has commandeered this luxe Ultra Lounge for the hottest after party since the S&L scandal. DJ As-Is provides the beats in the main room and the Savage Go-Go dancers provide the eye-candy. Hey, The Vault will even let you rock your flip-flops until the 10pm dress code takes effect and the fashion police start making arrests.

Chris Isaak

Chris Isaak

when:Monday-Wednesday, July 17th- 19th, 7:30pm
where:Mountain Winery, 14831 Pierce Rd., Saratoga
phone:408.741.0763
price:$50-$80

FOREVER BLUE: Chris Isaak, our modern day musical scion of the early guitar slinging days of Elvis and Orbison, cruises through town for three concerts at the Mountain Winery. A critically acclaimed musician following his own blues pop-rockabilly crooning style while surprisingly having only minor flirtations with mainstream rock, Isaak is the real deal. He starts his Bay Area tour at the Mountain Winery in support of his first greatest hits album which will probably be completely superfluous to any long time Chris Isaak fan, but they'll buy it anyway.

Sultry

Sultry

when:Friday, July 14th, 9pm
where:Taste Ultra Lounge, 87 N. San Pedro St., San Jose
phone:408.885.1016
price:$15

RED HOT SUCCUBI: A devilish trio of hotties are going to set up the Temptation shop at Taste Ultra Lounge this Friday to make spirited bids for your everlasting soul. The Sultry party probably won't condemn you to eternal damnation, but will certainly get your rump shaking with slick resident DJs Boy Wonder and Brotha Reese laying down the old school, funk and hip-hop tracks.

Diciembre Gris

Diciembre Gris

when:Friday, July 14th, 9pm
where:The Blank Club, 44 S. Almaden Ave., San Jose
phone:408.292.5265
price:$8

INDIE ESPANOL: Completely breaking away from their expected cultural norms, Diciembre Gris is Rock en Espanol's answer to the alternative and indie rock scenes. Hitting melodious riffs reminiscent of the British pop invasion of the '80s and '90s, Diciembre Gris incorporates both Spanish and English lyrics into their undeniable harmonies to hook a broad range of audiences. Diciembre Gris plays The Blank with fellow Spanish alt rockers Voz Elemental and Bajo Presion.

A Glimpse of the Future

Social Distortion

Social Distortion

when:Thursday-Friday, July 27th-28th, 9pm
where:The Catalyst, 1011 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz
phone:831.423.1336
price:$25

PRISON BOUND: Social Distortion has been throwing down speeding guitar licks through a booze soaked haze for years and is still one of the hardest living grease bands around. Blending rock, punk, rockabilly and a dash of country, these So-Cal boys have yet to take their foot off the gas pedal. A second Social D show has been added at the Catalyst because the first one sold out in something like 30 Jack fueled and frenzied seconds.

Women of Playboy Golf Casting Call

Women of Playboy Golf Casting Call

when:Saturday, August 5th, 7pm
where:Taste Ultra Lounge, 87 N. San Pedro, San Jose
phone:408.885.1016
price:Free before 11pm

BIRDIES, EAGLES, BUNNIES: You've gotta love a nightclub event that combines two of our favorite pastimes. The Playboy Golf Tournament will be looking for ladies to work the now classic event that's teeing up on August 21st and to console those who slice because their not keeping their eyes on the ball. But, c'mon, really, will anyone actually be thinking about golf at this thing?
