Boris and Bianca

FAIRYTALE SIMULATOR: Normally we bring you the best in clubs and concerts, but this jump-start to the San Jose art and tech symposium Zero One is too cool to pass up. Brad Isdrab's Boris and Bianca is like one of those old Choose Your Own Adventure books from back in the day, but completely geeked out. Boris and Bianca allows guests to move through a fairy tale inspired by Beauty and the Beast where they have control over the characters. Using Brothers Quay-like stop-motion animation and puppets, the narrative plays out differently each time depending on the choices made by the user. The display is accompanied by the cello compositions of Zoe Keating and DJ Basura spins in the gaps.

Tokyo Decadence

ANIME INDIE: These indie rockers from Oakland met in a Shanghai lounge and gelled over more than a few Jager-bombs, a love of rock 'n roll, a propensity for depravity and decadence. Tokyo Decadence makes get up and dance, grind with your favorite someone rock that has a penchant for debauchery and all the little things that you would never tell your parents about. The Trigger Renegades and other indie heads kick off this no cover turn on the Blank stage.

DJs Roger Moorehouse and Pete Avila have something to get ya'll movin' and shakin' right over hump day with a deeply grooved and infectious dance party vibe. And hey, after you hit the bourgeoning Campbell club scene, run by some of the best late night eats around: Taco Bravo.

Poseidon Adventure @ Cinema San Pedro

DOWN WITH THE SHIP: One of the greatest disaster movies ever made and about one hundred times better than the remake, The Poseidon Adventure crashes Cinema San Pedro tonight. The struggles of the cast to survive in a capsized ocean liner is legendary and so are the performances of actors Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowell, Shelly Winters and Leslie Nielson with the original dread score by the king of creepy evocative music, the one and only John Williams. Power struggles, survival, desperation and the fury of the ocean; what better way to spend a Wednesday evening?

Smash Mouth @ Metro's Music in the Park

LOCAL ALL-STARS: Grown directly from the local San Jose music scene, Smash Mouth blasted to the top of the charts in the late '90s and grew so heavily cross-promoted through movies and television commercials that one almost expected to see a Smash Mouth cartoon ala New Kids on the Block. Thankfully that didn't happen and these novelty pop-punkers kept making decent music while fully promoting good old San Jo. Smash Mouth repeatedly gets back to their hometown roots and keeps their fan base alive via free concert performances at every downtown festival. New Orleans alt-rockers Better Than Ezra open and this Music in the Park performance kicks off the Zero One art and tech symposium.

American Radio @ Music After Dark

OPEN ROAD ROCK: Born in the San Francisco indie scene, American Radio is a band that truly entertains the crowd with a unique blend of soulful singing and punk inspired riffs. Famed S.F. guitarist Chris Clouse backs up front man Brodie Stewart interweaving songs about love and heartache with ripping tunes about hitting the gas on the open road. American Radio has been tearing up the West Coast club circuit, but at Music After Dark you can catch them for the unbelievably low price of...free.

Foreigner

URGENT: These '70s arena rockers have lived to tell the tale through so many music transitions that it's hard to keep track of all the changes in the band; one thing's for certain however, you can still hear Foreigner on the radio and "Jukebox Hero" still rocks. Although Foreigner drifted into the foppish waters of balladeers in the '80s and eventually split up in 1989, Lou Gramm and Mick Jones realized the error of their ways and reunited soon thereafter. Foreigner is still "Hot Blooded" and still selling out venues whenever they do a reunion tour.

THURSDAY'S CHILD: Last week tragically saw the demise of probably the best Thursday night weekly dance party in the history of the South Bay, but even though The Velvet Shop has turned into a monthly, SoFA Lounge still wants to take care of your deep house needs. This Thursday sees the premier of Welcome to Our House at the SoFA Lounge with most of The Velvet Shop elite dropping mad house beats for the local bass heads. Welcome to Our House features DJs M3, MJ Gamez, Les Carter and Mars Faram keeping the dream alive.

Sammy Hagar

RED ROCKER: As one ex-front man goes down the proverbial tubes, another one rises...well somewhat rises. Headlining the San Jose Grand Prix last week was David Lee Roth once jumping front man of Van Halen and this week the short-lived Muppet-haired replacement, Sammy Hagar (who obviously invested his earnings much more wisely down in Baja) headlines the 107.7 Bone Bash bringing along the whole Cabo Wabo experience to the Bay Area. Despite all the rips, Sammy keeps on rocking and still can't drive 55. To make the resurgent '80s rock scene complete, Tesla graces the stage for this all-ages performance.

BIRDIES, EAGLES, BUNNIES: You've gotta love a nightclub event that combines two of our favorite pastimes. The Playboy Golf Tournament will be looking for ladies to work the now classic event that's teeing up on August 21st and to console those who slice because they're not keeping their eyes on the ball. Seriously though--and we know we're not the best golfers--collectively we'd probably lose a case of Titleist on the front nine alone.

Thriving Ivory

LOCAL PRIMER: Thriving Ivory's growth can be credited to local radio stations KFOG and Live 105 putting the band's debut singles "Overrated" and "Angels on the Moon" in rotation in their increasingly decreasing local segments. Thriving Ivory makes handsome-boy rock in the vein of Train and Maroon 5 bucking the hipster grain of their San Francisco home. They're touring in support of their self-titled debut album and there's sure to be some screaming girls in the crowd. Manchester School and Brea open.

Santana

THE REAL SUPERNATURAL: When you've reached rock-god status, it's perfectly acceptable to pare your birth name down and if Carlos Santana hasn't earned that level of acclaim then certainly no one can accredit that status to the likes of Cher. Santana rocks the Shoreline Amphitheater on Saturday playing his full lexicon of hits from his decades as one of the best musicians to ever set foot on a stage.

G. Love and Special Sauce

PHILADELPHONIC: The best thing to come out of the City of Brotherly Love since Rocky Balboa soared out of the dredges of Mickey's gym to whoop Apollo Creed's ass. G. Love and Special Sauce, purveyors of a funky musical brew spiked with ample doses of blues, rap, jazz, surf and alt-rock, have thrown plenty of newbie listeners for a loop. The cool, laid-back blues based sound of G. Love launched these Philly rockers into the spot light in 1994 with the infectious "Cold Beverage" and one of the best relationship songs ever made, "Baby's Got Sauce." Even though G. Love--a.k.a. singer, songwriter, harmonica player, guitarist Garret Dutton--recently hit the solo circuit, Special Sauce still jams together and lays down the coolest sounds around.

The Rock The Bells all day concert features the Wu-Tang clan, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Redman, De La Soul, Del the Funky Homosapien and many others representing raw lyrics spit over hot beats with no artificial additives.

The Mars Volta

AURAL EQUATIONS: The Mars Volta combines obtuse lyrics over progressive rock influenced heavily by punk riffs and Latin beats to for an intelligent, almost mathematical, sound like no other band today. These aren't psychedelia based acid jazzers or prog-poppers and the comparisons to the venerable Led Zeppelin--in musicianship and cryptology more than sound--are more than accurate. The Mars Volta is worth a trip over the hill on a school night as they gear up for their fall tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Los Straitjackets

LUCHA LIBRE ROCK: Nashville's luchador mask wearing Los Straitjackets have helped keep alive the underappreciated genre of instrumental rock with swaggering melodies and an offbeat Vaudevillian stage act featuring the lovely go-go dancing Pontani Sisters. The band has also accomplished the impossible. In 1999, Los Straitjackets reworked Celine Dion's ever so lame and mushy Titanic love theme into a kickass rock trip that actually made the sappy tune listenable; certainly a Herculean feat for any musician. Plus, the bowling alley venue freakin' rocks.
