San carlos St., San Jose 408.277.5277 $25-$45 BUY TICKETS		White Album Ensemble RUBBER SOULS: We suppose that parlaying your obsession into a viable occupation is the dream of every fan, well the White Album Ensemble has done just that taking their deep-rooted Beatlemania, nascent musical talent and love of splashy colored faux military uniforms to create one of the best Beatles cover bands ever. You usually see cover bands devoted solely to harder rocking outfits, but to see one covering the Beatles is probably your mom's dream come true. The group usually takes a pair of well known Beatle's albums and blends them together to form an eclectic concert that spans two wholly separate Beatle's styles and sounds. This show at the Montgomery is one of the first times the White Album Ensemble is appearing on a proper stage--with all the accoutrements--instead of an outdoor stage. Here's a big cheers to knowing that Yoko won't show up.

Dick Dale

KING OF THE SURF GUITAR: Dick Dale single handedly created the surf music style and no matter who or what band came after or copied the style this guitar legend will always be the best. His breakneck pace of playing along with an unrivaled stage presence--even into his fifth decade of performing--has kept Dick Dale, not only at the top of his game, but the forbearer and front runner of guitar gods. If all you know about the undisputed King of the Surf Guitar and the often called father of heavy metal--his speed, style, licks and amp experiments were copied by everyone from Hendrix to Van Halen--is from Pulp Fiction and that Black Eyed Peas sample, cruise to The Blank for a session with a true living legend.

The Breakfast Club @ Cinema San Pedro

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DETENTION: Probably the absolute best representation of teen life in the mid-eighties, The Breakfast Club closes out this year's Cinema San Pedro series. Sure writer and director John Hughes was a never-ending fountain of teen movies in the '80s, but none of them captured the life and times of high schoolers as perfectly as The Breakfast Club (Ferris Bueller's Day Off is still Hughes' best movie though). We know it's not Saturday morning but you can still hang in detention with the jock, the princess, the criminal, the geek and the basket case for the evening.

Greg Kihn @ Metro's Music in the Park

CITIZEN KIHN: Sure you can hear him on the radio every morning, but that's really just some amorphous voice coming over the airwaves easily disembodied from an actual person and Greg Kihn is more than just some on air personality. In the '70s, Kihn became a top selling Bay Area artist on legendary Beserkley records playing straight ahead rock 'n roll while other contemporaries where creating orchestral bloated prog rock. He scored a few hits in the '80s, most notably "Jeopardy"which gained him national notoriety and Greg Kihn kept right on recording becoming one of the most recognizable voices in the Bay Area rock scene. The Groove Kings open up and The Greg Kihn Band closes out yet another great year of free concerts in downtown San Jose.

Los Lobos

MORE THAN LA BAMBA: Los Lobos is one of the most distinctive American rock bands around. Their unique blend of roots rock, rockabilly, country and blues mixed well with liberal amounts of traditional Spanish and Mexican music produces a gritty sound that pulls in the best from a cross section of genres redefined in Los Lobos' signature style. Formed in the early '70s while still in high school in East LA, Los Lobos amazing musicianship was readily apparent as they played free concerts in support of the Chicano movement. Even with their politically tinged inception, Los Lobos are more into rocking than beating you over the head with a particular agenda.

Dew Action Sports Tour

EXTREMELY EXTREME: Ah, the Dew Action Sports Tour, action sports heaven in our own backyard. The four-day trick fest hits the HP Pavilion starting on Thursday and runs through the weekend featuring skate vert and skate park, BMX vert, supercross and park, with two days of sick FMX action. It's gonna be four-days of death defying stunts, hot action, concerts and whatever else this herd of adrenaline junkies can get into. The skate vert and BMX park finals are on Sunday starting a few hours earlier at 11am and you can't miss the FMX final grudge match, gloves off, showdown between Nate Adams and Travis Pastrana on Saturday night. Dave Matthews Band

SUPER JAM: Probably one of the few contemporary bands that can truly be placed squarely in the supergroup category, the Dave Matthews Band brings their modern day jam band action to the Shoreline. The band was everywhere in the mid-nineties and built up a following that rivaled the population of some small countries in both devotion and numbers. Heck, we don't even think you could get a date during the '90s if you didn't own a copy of Under the Table and Dreaming--which the band is so much more remembered for than being the lap dogs of the DC gang in their bootlegger crackdown before the days of Napster.

Megadeth

BUSINESS IS GOOD: Thrash metal icons, Megadeth headline the Gigantour which screams into the Oakland Arena in all its black metal glory Friday afternoon for a little whiskey and beer soaked anarchy laced noise assault. Megadeth has always played faster and louder than the rest--well except maybe for Slayer--and Dave Mustaine could single handedly beat all of Metallica in a thrash contest. The Gigantour (kind of a lame title for what's basically any thrash metal fan's dream come true, but, eh, what are ya gonna do?) also sees Lamb of God, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Over Kill and others hell bent on corrupting the youth.

Tall Paul

BEAT TRAVELER: The most popular DJ from the UK in the '90s, Tall Paul is responsible for the trendsetting shift in dance music from just plain old house to progressive house and trance in the late '90s opening up the doors for a legion of DJs. Tall Paul, along with other well-known bass heads Paul Oakenfold and Paul van Dyk, became globetrotting DJs playing sold out shows the world over for thousands of gyrating fans. And, even though the rave craze has somewhat died, the music lives on. A.F.I.

SING THE SORROW: Hailing out of the badlands of Ukiah, emo-punkers A.F.I. tear up the Bill Graham Civic tonight as part of their ongoing tour for their latest, Decemberunderground. Oscillating between hardcore punk riffs and emo balladeering, A.F.I. probably has one of the most dedicated followings of any band riding the high crests of the sometimes lame emo wave as the modern incarnation of good ole' punk rock. But, unlike most others in the black nail polish, floppy haired, eye shadow dabbed set, A.F.I. can actually crank the amps and blow the roof of any joint. If ya can't hit The City tonight, Davey and the boys will be playing over the hill on Saturday at the Santa Cruz Civic.

Matisyahu

OY TO THE WORLD: When Hasidic Jewish rap/ reggae artist Matisyahu broke onto the scene with 2004's Shake Off the Dust...Arise, many dismissed him as a novelty act ala Vanilla Ice. But, Matisyahu was--and is--for real, packing in fans, gaining critical acclaim and making a solid musical connection that screams a solid unity sentiment that it doesn't matter what culture you're from because good music is still good music. And heck, seeing a Chasid stage diving, sideburns flying behind him, yarmulke ablaze behind solid raps and dancehall reggae beats is totally worth the price of admission.

A Tribe Called Quest

LYRICAL SCENARIO: Absolutely the most intelligent and artistic rap group of the '90s, A Tribe Called Quest kicked off the hip-hop alternative to the ego-driven, misogynistic gangsta rap that ruled the times infusing it more with jazz stylings and positive messages. A Tribe Called Quest, however, didn't just soften the rap sound, but confronted numerous black issues of the day with a deconstructionist attitude to how African-Americans portrayed themselves through the rap industry--their second album, The Low End Theory, is easily the best hip-hop album ever recorded. Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Phife decided to call it quits in the late '90s, but are, thankfully, hitting the studio again.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL: Training camps have broke, pre-season is over, rookies have been cut and the rosters are complete--let the 2006 NFL season begin. We know that the season starts on Thursday, but Monday Night Football has been a tradition and national event for so long that the first MNF game of the year really cements the start of the season. However, the lackluster announcing team of Thiesmann, Tirico and the ever-annoying Tony Kornheiser calling the shots of the greatest franchise in TV sports history might make you pine for the days when Dennis Miller had a seat in the booth. Luckily the guys at Mission Ale House have been preparing for the new season as well, tapping kegs, finalizing the $1.95 menu and bringing in the Miller Lite girls to handle the secondary. AND NO GRASS SKIRTS: Originally from Kona, Hawaii, but rocking the crowds with electric guitars instead on ukes, Pepper perfectly blends island rhythms with melodic alt-punk riffs to form a raw sound that rivals any other rock/ska/reggae outfit. The amped up trio's live shows rock and sometimes it's hard to understand how such a complex, highly danceable sound can come out of three guys who's first studio cut album was only released a scant six years ago. Just be careful not to spill your brew while you're on the floor--the security guys don't take kindly to it and usually aren't in island mode.

Van Morrison

AMERICAN ROCK LEGEND: One of the most prolific singer/ songwriters in the storied history of rock and roll, Van Morrison brings his sometimes shouting, sometimes raspy, always poetic voice and blues man skills to the Greek Theatre tonight. The Crystal Method

RAVERS RETURN: A force in the LA underground dance scene, The Crystal Method are still pumping out the rave inspired tracks that cemented the duo as America's answer to the Chemical Brothers. After the waning of the LA rave scene that was hampered by overbearing police pressure, completely out of style random violence and a price hike in MDMA, The Crystal Method did what any self-respecting techno, big beat, dance party directors would do--took the show on the road.
