News From Silicon Valley's Neighborhoods

San Jose-That roar Thursday morning will be the sound of students scurrying to their favorite ATM machines. Turns out those $100-a-head tickets to see Beck and Devo at the valley's high-tech charity dance party, Silicon Planet, are coming down in price as a special treat for the youth market. On Thursday morning, anyone with a student ID can score the tickets for $35 apiece at the San Jose State Event Center. Organizers say there will be a couple hundred tickets up for grabs on a first-come, first-served basis.

"We wanted to do something positive to get more young people involved," Tom Hayes, Silicon Planet CEO and former Applied Materials chief, says. "It's finding that happy medium--between fundraising for charity and making sure it's affordable for young people. I can remember being quite cash-strapped in college. This is an awesome show for the price."

Last year, Silicon Planet raised $150,000 for AIDS research.
