Fat / Olives

By Gretchen Giles

Doing good for others just got tastier, as Sausalito's bastion of line-caught fresh wild seafood, Fish Restaurant, hosts a Fat Tuesday benefit dinner for Haiti relief, Doctors Without Borders and area fisherman who practice sustainable practices. Set right on a working harbor in the less glamorous northern stretches of Sausalito, Fish is acclaimed both for the quality of the food it serves and the efforts it makes to ensure that the oceans continue to provide a bounty. They first started benefit dinners in order to help the people of New Orleans after the Katrina disaster.

This year honors the Big Easy with zydeco music and Creole dishes, but is focused on helping those in Hispaniola. Over the past four years, the restaurant has raised some $50,000 and in addition to benefitting Katrina victims, has given to the local salmon fleet, to the SalmonAid nonprofit and to area crabbers following the Cosco Busan oil spill. Auction items will abound and dancing is encouraged on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 6pm to 9pm at Fish Restaurant, 350 Harbor Drive, Sausalito. $99. 408.416.8880.

In Sebastopol, GTO's Seafood House also celebrates Fat Tuesday with Creole food, the Canal Street Jazz Band, a costume contest and the King Cake for a mere $5 cover. Happy hour with specialty drinks begins at 4:30pm and the music, at 6pm. 234 S. Main St., Sebastopol. 707.824.9922.

The enamored can show olive their love at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Feb. 13–14 as the winery hosts Olea europaea expert Don Landis and lots of home curers in a two-day celebration of oil from the Olive Press and UC Davis pomology professor Louise Ferguson stands by ready to answer growing, pruning and processing questions. On Saturday, radio host Gene Burns will broadcast live from the event and Dr. Judith Taylor will discuss her new book The Olive in California: History of an Immigrant Tree.

The weekend is free and events run 10am to 4pm.

24724 Arnold Drive, Sonoma. 707.931.7551.

Olive celebrations pair up with wine and food at Vinolivo, an evening of good eats and great drinks on Feb. 12 at the the Lodge at Sonoma. Boutique and larger wineries pour while all manner of Sonoma Valley restaurants serve at this walk-around event that focuses on olives and oils, ports, sparkling wines and yes, pommes frites. General admission ticket sales close on Feb. 11 at 10pm and only a few tickets will be available at the door. 1325 Broadway (at Leveroni), Sonoma. 7pm to 10pm. $65. 707.935.0803.
