Gold on Summit Road

By Stett Holbrook

BURRELL SCHOOL VINEYARDS, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Summit Road in Los Gatos (south of town off Highway 17), recently won gold medals for both its estate chardonnay and its pinot noir in Appelation America's "Best of Appellation" competition.  For more information, go to  www.burrellschool.com and www.appelationamerica.com.

INSTEAD OF just selling stylish but cheap kitchenware and low-cost underwear, Target is now offering fair-trade certified wine. This month, Target introduced its "Wandering Grape" collection, a set of certified fair-trade wines. Buying certified fair trade wines ensures that the producers were paid a living wage and that the grapes were grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

Target is one of the first big-box retailers to sell certified fair trade wines. The Wandering Grape collection includes an award-winning malbec-merlot blend from Argentina and a cabernet-shiraz blend from South Africa.
