[whitespace] Björk Swan Song

Björk

By Gina Arnold

Those whose first introduction to Icelandic singer Björk was her performance at last year's Oscar ceremonies (she was nominated for best song for the Lars Von Trier movie Dancer in the Dark, in which she also starred) should be informed that her dress, which was made to look like the pelt of a dead swan, complete with head, neck and beak, was no fluke: Björk's music is even odder than her sartorial style. Granted, she sings in English, but otherwise, her sound is as exotic as her looks, containing little narrative and even less formal melody. Nevertheless, there is something extremely compelling, even attractive, about her unique artistic vision. Cold and sweet, her bizarre songs could be described as Nordic/punk/folk opera. She makes a rare and much anticipated appearance at the beautiful Paramount Theater.

October 17; 8pm; Paramount Theatre, Oakland; $45-$100 (sold out).
